Social Information on Disability

SID gets BIG!

SID (Social Information on Disability) is celebrating the news that they have got a Big Lottery Fund grant.

‘The grant for £500,000 is terrific news’ said Hazel Plastow, Chief Executive. ‘We have great plans for this project. It will bring together organisations working with disabled people from across the whole of the South East of England, to make sure their voices are heard at regional and national level. It is vital that disability is on everyone’s agenda when decisions are being made, and we are confident that with support from the Big Lottery Fund, we can make a real difference’.

Over the next three years, SID will be working with around 300 organisations in the South East, from Milton Keynes in the north of the region to the Isle of Wight and Kent in the south. SID will establish a region-wide network to support the exchange of information between local disability organisations, and ensure their views are considered as new policies are developed, ranging from disability benefits and health care to parking and access.

This should result in better-informed decisions being made about issues likely to impact the lives 1.2m people with a disability or long term illness in the region.

Hazel Plastow continues ‘This is bigger than anything we have undertaken before, but the Big Lottery Fund grant is a great boost to the disability information sector and we are delighted to be taking on the challenge’.
