Social Information on Disability

Information Exchange Network - October 2007

The Information Exchange Network brings together professionals from Surrey's voluntary & statutory sectors who are involved in the provision of disability information. If you are interested in attending please contact Hazel Plastow.

DissBASE

A demonstration was given of the disability information database DissBASE, which is used by information services in Surrey and across the UK. We understand that responsibility for maintaining the national data in this package is due to be taken over from Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation by Leonard Cheshire from November 2007. However, it is unlikely that the Surrey information will be part of this new package, so SID has purchased a number of DissBASE licences and is planning to build up the Surrey data for distribution to Surrey users. Volunteer help is being sought to help keep this information up-to-date.

Access Guides for Surrey

The group also looked at the current information on Access to places in Surrey. Many areas of Surrey do have access guides either in printed format or for the Woking area on the website of DisabledGo, see the SID factsheet on Access Guides. However, the format is not standardised across the county and some areas have no information available. This highlighted the need for some form of countywide co-ordination to work towards ensuring everyone in Surrey has access to information and that all areas of the county are covered. A project for 2008 perhaps!

Leaflet for Families & Young Disabled People

Funding for a leaflet listing the 30 main organisations to support families and young disabled people in Surrey has been obtained from the Local Area Network Fund. A small working party will meet to discuss the content and design, if you would like to be involved please contact Hazel Plastow.
